Abstract
In this article, we consider the current status of women in surgical training. We review the current distribution of women in surgical training programs. We consider some of the factors in medical school that may influence medical student perceptions of surgical careers. We identify the special circumstances women may face during their training. We propose some measures that may enhance the value of a surgical career for women, and in so doing, likely improve the quality of surgical training for all prospective surgeons.
