Abstract
Diltiazem, a calcium channel antagonist with negative dromotropic properties, was given to 16 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation who had poor exercise rate control on a regimen of digoxin alone. The addition of diltiazem resulted in significant reduction of ventricular rate at rest, at all levels of exercise, and during 24-hour ambulatory monitoring. Diltiazem is an effective agent for control of ventricular response in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation who are being treated with digoxin.
